Ash Wednesday marks the beginning of the liturgical season of Lent. lent is the 40 days (not counting Sundays) that lead up to Easter. In worship on Ash Wednesday, worshipers receive ashes on their forehead with the words, "you are dust and to dust you shall return" (Genesis 3:19).
